FAQs
Why do I need a website?
A website is your online presence and can reach millions of people who may not otherwise know you exist. Your website is always available around the clock for anybody to find and identify the services and products you offer.
It is an extremely powerful tool, if presented correctly, allowing you to showcase you, your products and your services to a greater audience, therefore increasing potential sales and enhancing customer service.
I’m only small though, are you sure?
A while ago, someone said to me that they wanted to book an appointment at a local hairdresser. They knew the name of the hairdresser and where they were. After a period of searching it would appear that the hairdresser in question didn’t have a website, not even a simple page with contact details. They lost the sale.
How many lost haircuts before they would have been better off paying for even the simplest of pages?
Does my site need to look great?
How your website looks and the user experience can say so much more about you and your business. First impressions really do matter, particularly when a user will decide whether to continue looking at your site within only a few seconds. If that potential client likes what they see, they’ll stay longer – learning more about you, your brand and your products and services. Your products and services are truly perceived by the quality of your site.
Does it really matter if my website looks dated, isn’t information king?
People just don’t look at things that aren’t attractive, well presented and usable.
Take the example of a Book-keepers website:
A good, simple graphical presentation, list of services, perhaps costs, contact information, a few quotes from satisfied customer and an about us page to tell you a little about the business. It’s not the biggest site with the most content but it doesn’t need to be!
Look at the same site with a ‘late eighties’ design but loads of information. Now, honestly, which one would you pick? Which one looks most appealing, professional?
Things change rapidly on the internet and what was accepted as graphically appealing just a couple of years ago will not necessarily be so accepted today.
If your business needs to provide plenty of information, then a good website is a great way to present this information…….only if it looks and feels good and engages the viewer.
I realise I need a website, what do I do now?
Simple, contact us. We’ll look at what you want to achieve and provide you with a quote based on the information you provide. We’ll then take you through the steps required to get your site built and running. It’s a simple process, no matter how big your site is.
Do you register domain names?
We are more than happy to do this for you. We can work with you to choose a suitable name for your online presence if you wish. You may, however, choose to take care of this part yourself, this is fine too.
Can you host/upload my website?
Yes we provide full hosting facilities. Alternatively, as you own the site, you are welcome to arrange your own hosting.
Can you provide email accounts?
Yes we can offer you any type of email and webmail account.
Can you build database driven and e-commerce websites?
Yes. We can deliver fully Content Managed sites (CMS), e-commerce sites and just about every derivative you can think of.
How much will my website cost?
We can get you online for as little as £100, we can do it impressively for £100,000! We are priced very competitively and we do NOT compromise on quality.
My neighbour’s kids build websites for pocket money, why shouldn’t I use them?
You can if you like. What a risk though! I, the author of this page and co-owner of Blue Lobster IT, have been working in this industry since the birth of the internet. I couldn’t tell you how much work has been brought to me to be re-developed. I’ve seen it so many times over the years. I can lay bricks but I don’t build houses, it’s not what I’m qualified and experienced at. If it goes wrong, it’s disastrous and has to be rebuilt professionally. Why risk your business in this way? By the way - Don’t ask me to build you an extension!
I’ve already got a site, what should I do to keep it up to date? Do I need to?
It’s good to update your site regularly, if your business needs it. Not all businesses do. We offer a FREE service, whereby we’ll take quick look at your site and make some suggestions of things you could do to improve the site and/or update it. Just contact us and let us have a look at your existing site, we’ll also give you an estimate to carry out a full appraisal. If the occasional ‘tweak’ is required, we can carry these out for you at an hourly rate.
What is SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)? How do I rank higher in Google?
Search Engine Optimisation is described by some as a dark art, or wizardry. It isn’t! Google, and other search engines, use a number of criteria to ‘weight’ your ranking in search results. Search Engine Optimisation is simply trying to identify what the search engines like and analyzing and amending the structure, content, links etc of your site to make it more likely to achieve higher ranking in the search engines.
There are no guarantees that investing money in SEO will get your page to the ‘top of the charts’, but being top of the charts isn’t not always necessary to achieve better business conversion ratios. We can work with you to work out the best balance between allocation of expenditure in pay per click and organic search enhancement campaigns. We can’t promise results, and anyone that does isn’t being completely honest with you, but we can show you what we can do for your site, why, how much it will cost you and what realistic results you may expect. See our SEO Section for more information.
